In Chinese tradition, each of the twelve lunar months is watched over by a flower and the goddess who presides over it. This mirror gathers all twelve flower goddesses (十二花神) onto a single blossom-shaped face, drawn from a Qing dynasty white jade twelve-month pendant set held in the imperial collection. Magnolia opens the first month and plum blossom closes the twelfth, with peony, lotus, osmanthus and chrysanthemum turning between them, so that a full year of flowering rests in the palm of the hand.
