The Ruyi Peony Song Brocade

★★★★★ 4,000+ Verified 5-Star Reviews

Graceful, luminous, and regal.

The same silk artisans who wove the ceremonial silk for Princess Diana in 1981, and who serve the British Royal Family today, wove the Song brocade for this bag.

The Ruyi Peony, an emblem of continuity and triumph, crowned by the peony. China's "National Beauty." Woven in authentic Song brocade (宋锦), the Suzhou imperial weave. This is not printed silk. The pattern doesn't sit on the surface. It lives inside the weave itself.

No two bags are the same.

Designed by Master artisans, for the woman who appreciates beauty beyond her own corner of the world.

The Story & Craft Behind The Ruyi Peony

The silk house behind this bag, Shangji Pavilion, was founded in 1889, weaving fabrics for imperial and high-ranking nobility.

Through the wars and industrial upheaval of the early twentieth century, the craft nearly disappeared. But the skill of its artisans survived, and in the late twentieth century it was recognised by the British Royal Family, who appointed the house as their official silk purveyor.

These are the hands that wove the ceremonial silk for Princess Diana in 1981, and were specially appointed by Her Majesty The Queen in 2011. Today, those same artisans are working with us to weave this Song brocade.

Beautiful enough to turn heads, woven well enough to hold its form, and carry its quiet blessings for generations.

  • Woven by the Royal-Appointed Silk House of Shangji Pavilion
The Song brocade in this bag comes from the same heritage weaving house commissioned for Princess Diana in 1981 and later appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Song brocade is among the most technically demanding silks in the world, woven at a pace measured in centimetres per hour, taking days to weeks for a single panel.
  • Antique Gold Hardware by Master Zhou Mingyue
Master Zhou (age 56) casts and hand-polishes each gold-tone fitting, luxurious in look yet balanced in weight against the brocade. She is also the one who engraves your bag's serial number into the metal.
  • Leatherwork by Master Lu Zhenhua
Master Lu (age 71) frames the brocade panel in a soft ivory top-layer cowhide and builds every bag from the inside out, obsessive about the parts you'll never see. It's the reason this bag carries like one costing several times more. And the reason it will outlast them.
  • Designed For Daily Life by Vivienne Lin
Some bags only "work" with the right outfit, the right occasion. But our designer, Vivienne Lin (age 43), drew the Ruyi Peony with thoughtful, structured compartments so it looks at home specifically in your hands. Handheld, on the shoulder, or across the body, with the clothes you already own and the life you actually lead.

"I've bought a lot of 'heritage' bags that turn out to be print on canvas. This is the opposite. You can feel that the pattern is woven in the second you pick it up. It has weight and structure, it holds its shape, and the ivory leather against the brocade is just gorgeous in person. When I found out the silk house behind it wove for the Royal Family, it made complete sense. It feels that considered."

如意定胜,富贵芳华

All as the heart wishes, and assured of triumph; a life of abundance and flourishing grace.

The Story Behind the Bag

The peony has been China's flower of rank and abundance since the Tang court, when the imperial gardens of Chang'an were planted with it as the bloom of wealth and high honour. Here that flower returns, set at the heart of the Ruyi Peony pattern (如意定胜纹), where ruyi scepters and silver ingot forms are gathered in fours around a single blossom. The reading is plain to anyone who knows it: all as one wishes (如意), and a life of abundance (富贵).

The pattern carries an older Suzhou story too. In the Southern Song, when the Han family army marched out to defend the region, the people of Suzhou pressed dingsheng cakes (定胜糕) with a wish for victory and a safe return. The motif that grew from that wish, the dingsheng pattern (定胜纹), came to stand for triumph and good fortune, and was worked into silk, architecture and treasured objects for centuries after. To carry it is to carry a quiet blessing for the road ahead.

Woven, Not Printed

The face of this tote is not printed leather. It is Song Brocade (宋锦), one of the great brocades of China and a recognised intangible cultural heritage of the country. Each panel is woven on a jacquard loom, the pattern built thread by thread into the structure of the silk itself, a process that runs to more than thirty separate stages before a single length is finished.

The brocade is mulberry silk, framed and given structure in premium cowhide leather. In the Cream White colourway the pattern is woven in soft pastels, the Ruyi Peony motif carried in pale gold, ivory and quiet blue. In the Antique Brown colourway the bag takes on its alternative design, the dingsheng motif rendered in gold woven Song Brocade (织金宋锦), where metallic gold thread is carried through the weave for a deeper, more antique lustre.

Key Features

  • Genuine Song Brocade — the woven face is real Song Brocade (宋锦), one of China's great historic brocades and a recognised national intangible cultural heritage, not a printed imitation.
  • Woven on a jacquard loom — the pattern is built thread by thread into the silk through more than thirty separate stages, the same loom tradition Suzhou has refined for centuries.
  • Mulberry silk face — the brocade is woven in mulberry silk, prized for its depth of colour and quiet sheen.
  • The Ruyi Peony blessing — ruyi scepters and silver ingot forms gather in fours around a central peony, a motif read as assured good fortune (如意) and a life of abundance (富贵).
  • A Suzhou victory legend — the dingsheng pattern (定胜纹) traces to the dingsheng cakes pressed for the Han family army, carrying a centuries old wish for triumph and a safe return.
  • The Tang court flower — the peony has stood for wealth and high honour since it filled the imperial gardens of Chang'an, the lineage the brand is named for.
  • Two heritage weaves — Cream White carries the Ruyi Peony in soft pastel Song Brocade, while Antique Brown is rendered in gold woven Song Brocade (织金宋锦), with metallic gold thread carried through the weave.
  • Made to be kept — each piece is one of a kind in its pattern placement and arrives with a metal authenticity card and an engraved serial number.

Premium Materials

Body and trim are cut from premium cowhide leather, chosen for its weight, its hold and the way it settles with use. The woven face is mulberry silk Song Brocade, gold woven in the Antique Brown colourway. Hardware is finished in polished gold tone, and the interior is fully structured so the bag keeps its shape on the shoulder or in the hand.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind

Because each brocade panel is cut from a continuously woven length, the exact placement of the pattern falls a little differently on every bag. The piece that arrives with you will be subtly its own, distinct from the one carried by anyone else. The character of the design stays consistent throughout; the small variations are simply the signature of a woven, hand finished object.

Authenticity and Craft

Every Tang Heritage piece arrives with a metal authenticity card and an individually engraved serial number, a quiet record that the bag is genuine and accounted for. Keep the two together. They are part of the provenance the bag carries for as long as you keep it.

Pre-order Note

This piece is prepared in limited batches to preserve the integrity of its craftsmanship. Your order will be dispatched within 10–12 working days, allowing each bag to be carefully completed and inspected before it reaches you. We believe pieces of this nature are worth the wait.
