From The Silk Artisans Of The British Royal Family
★★★★★ 4,000+ Verified 5-Star Reviews
The hands that weaved the ceremonial silk for Princess Diana in 1981. Specially appointed by Her Majesty The Queen in 2011. The official silk purveyor of the British Royal Family today.
These same hands are now working with us to produce this magnificent song brocade for this very special release.
The cultural significance of this collaboration is almost unprecedented, and we are honored to present to you, the Tang Red 27 Ruyi Peony Song Brocade Tote.
Founded in 1889 during the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong period, Shangji Pavilion specialized in silk fabrics for Imperial & high-ranking nobility.
During the early 20th century, due to the impact of Western industrial civilisation and multiple wars, this traditional craftsmanship was in a state of decline.
But even so, Shangji Pavilion’s skills as silk artisans were recognized by the British Royal Family in the late 20th century, leading to their eventual appointment as official silk purveyor.
Today, this team of silk artisans with deep historical heritage and cultural foundations are working with us to bring centuries-old craftsmanship to the world.
The Process—Imperial Song Brocade & Tang Heritage Leather
Royal Family-Commissioned Silk
The Song Brocade woven into this bag originates from the same heritage weaving house commissioned for Princess Diana in 1981, and later appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Her team meticulously crafts each high-quality alloy metal hardware, exuding luxury while maintaining a balanced weight.
Spacious, Structured Interior
She emphasises that luxury is not just about beauty—it's about thoughtful compartments that help you stay organised while still maintaining the bag's beauty.
A Woven Heirloom You May See Once, And Then Never Again
宋锦
Song brocade (宋锦, Sòng jǐn) is considered one of the most technically demanding silk textiles in the world.
Among Chinese brocades, it sits at the very top tier — alongside Nanjing Yunjin — in difficulty and prestige.
Production times are often measured in centimetres per hour, taking days to weeks to produce a single panel.
As a result, this type of craftsmanship, that was historically only made as imperial gift fabric or court furnishings, is only made in limited quantities.
Once sold out, it may never be produced again.

The Tang Red 27 Ruyi Peony Song Brocade Tote is crafted from imperial Song Brocade woven in Suzhou; the same heritage weaving tradition once appointed to produce ceremonial fabrics for the British Royal Household. This is not printed silk. It is structurally woven brocade, where each motif is formed thread by thread on traditional looms.
At the heart of this design lies the Ruyi Ding Sheng pattern, four interlinked ruyi motifs forming a chain of continuity and triumph. In the center blooms the peony, revered in Chinese culture as the “National Beauty,” symbol of prosperity, honour and flourishing destiny.
Structured in a refined 27cm silhouette, the tote balances ceremonial richness with everyday composure. The creamy neutral leather frame softens the brilliance of the brocade, allowing the woven gold, ivory and blush motifs to shimmer with quiet elegance.

Preserving Cultural Heritage Through Fashion – A Legacy in Your Hands

True artistry—the kind that takes years to master, that is passed down through generations—is at risk of being lost. But with every Tang Heritage bag created, a centuries-old tradition is revived, protected, and carried forward into the future.
When you carry this bag, you carry a piece of history. You are not just supporting a luxury craft, you are playing a role in preserving an art form that has been cherished for over a thousand years. Every purchase fuels the work of artisans who have spent their lives perfecting these intricate techniques, allowing them to pass their knowledge on to future generations.
This is how fashion becomes more than just material goods. This is how heritage lives on: through the hands of those who wear it with pride.
