Since the Tang dynasty, the peony (牡丹) has been honoured as the king of flowers and praised as the bloom of national beauty and heavenly fragrance (国色天香). It flourished in the imperial gardens of Chang'an and Luoyang, where its full, layered blooms became the chosen emblem of wealth, honour, and a life lived in abundance. Here the peonies are carried on a scrolling vine (缠枝牡丹), a winding stem that never breaks as it travels the cloth, an old and deliberate symbol of continuity, of life renewing itself without end. Together the two hold a single wish, that wealth and honour should run unbroken through the generations (富贵绵长). The Tang Red 25 Bronze Peony Song Brocade Top-Handle Bag carries that lineage forward in woven silk, a piece composed slowly and made to be kept.
The Motif · Scrolling Peony Vine (缠枝牡丹)
Across the body of the bag, peonies are woven onto a continuous scrolling vine, the winding stem turning back on itself so the blooms, buds, and leaves flow into one another without a visible end. The motif is not printed onto the surface but formed within the cloth itself, so the flowers sit tonally against the weave rather than upon it, in deep oxblood and burgundy over a caramel-bronze ground. As the light moves, the ground shifts between warm amber and antique gold, and the blooms seem to deepen and recede, an effect drawn from the brocade's own colour-tossing technique (彩抛换色). The result is restrained and painterly, a garden caught mid-growth in thread.
Song Brocade (宋锦)
The body textile is Song Brocade (宋锦), one of China's Three Famous Brocades (三大名锦) alongside Yun brocade and Shu brocade. Born in Suzhou and brought to its height under the Song dynasty, it is woven from mulberry silk (桑蚕丝) through more than 20 distinct processes, from silk reeling and dyeing to the final weaving of the cloth. Its pattern is created by warp and weft working jointly to raise the design (经纬联合显花), and its signature colour-tossing technique (彩抛换色) allows hues to shift across the surface without breaking the weave.
The pace of the craft is its own measure of value. By hand, only 10 centimetres of Song Brocade can be woven in a single day. The tradition's standing is such that Song Brocade was selected for the leaders' attire at the APEC 2014 summit, a modern affirmation of a cloth that has clothed scholars and emperors for centuries.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind
Because the brocade is woven and cut by hand, no two bags carry the peony in exactly the same place. The bloom that falls at the centre of one piece may sit a little higher or lower on another, so the placement on your bag may differ subtly from the product images while the overall aesthetic stays faithful. A hand-measured variance of 1 to 2 cm is normal, and is part of what makes each piece its own.
