In 2006, Song brocade was placed on China's first national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the same protected status given to Peking Opera and the craftsmanship of the Forbidden City. 

By the late twentieth century, the master weavers who truly understood its construction could be counted on two hands.

    Master Qian is China's national-level inheritor of Song brocade weaving. "Brocade is one of the noblest and most complicated arts," he says, "the most exquisite, the most artistic." The loom he works takes years to master and interlocks every thread from within, giving the cloth a firmness no modern weave can match.
  • Antique Gold Hardware by Master Zhou Mingyue 
    Master Zhou (age 56) shapes the turn-lock clasp and fittings in antique gold. Warm, aged, unshowy against the chocolate leather. She is also the one who engraves your bag's serial number into the metal.
  • Leatherwork by Master Lu Zhenhua 
    Master Lu (age 71) frames the brocade panel in deep chocolate split-cowhide and builds every bag from the inside out, obsessive about the parts you'll never see. It's the reason this bag carries like one costing several times more. And the reason it will outlast them.
  • Designed For Daily Life by Vivienne Lin

Song Brocade — 宋锦 — takes its name from the Song dynasty, when imperial weavers in Suzhou perfected a technique so demanding it would take centuries to master and generations to preserve. Its threads are layered and interlocked from within, giving the cloth a firmness and body unlike anything produced on a modern loom. It does not drape loosely. It holds its form. It carries itself.

In 2006, Song Brocade was inscribed on China's first national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage as a living practice. The Tang Red 24 Baoxiang Flower Song Brocade Shoulder Bag is made from this fabric. What you hold is not a reference to that history. It is that history, continuing.

The BaoXiang Hua ( 宝相花)

The Bao Xiang Hua ( 宝相花), or Precious Auspicious Floral, is one of the oldest and most revered motifs in the Chinese decorative tradition. Rooted in Buddhist iconography and refined across the Tang and Song dynasties, it draws together three of China's most auspicious flowers into a single, harmonious bloom: the lotus for purity, the peony for wealth and honour, and the pomegranate for abundance and many blessings.

What makes this motif remarkable is not any one symbol; it is the act of holding all of them at once. Rounded in composition and precise in layering, it was designed to be carried close. To accompany a woman through her life and leave its quiet wishes with everyone she meets. This is not decoration. This is intention, woven into cloth.
