There is a flower the Chinese have loved for more than a thousand years, and loved with a particular reverence. The begonia, known as haitang (海棠), was named the immortal among flowers (花中神仙) by the Tang dynasty scholar Jia Dan, written into his Catalogue of a Hundred Flowers (百花谱) and admired thereafter in the courtyards of emperors and the verses of poets. Planted in the imperial gardens beside magnolia and peony, it formed a blessing spoken in the very arrangement of the beds, a wish for a noble house held in wealth and honour, jade hall, wealth and honour (玉堂富贵). The Tang Red 23 Embroidered Haitang Flower Clutch gathers that long inheritance into a single object, small enough to hold in one hand, intended to be kept for a lifetime.

The Motif — Haitang (海棠)

The haitang on this clutch is no ordinary rendering. The flower has been taken apart and composed anew, resolved into a four-petalled medallion that rests within a quiet lattice, a treatment that allows an ancient bloom to sit as easily against the cleanest modern silhouette as against something more classical. Worked entirely within a single tonal family, the pattern does not announce itself. It reveals itself slowly, the way silk catches the changing light of a room, each petal turning warm or pale as it meets the eye.

Silk Embroidery

Each panel is embroidered in mulberry silk at a density of 600 stitches to the Chinese inch, drawing on double-set stitch (双套针), laid stitch (施针) and even stitch (齐针) in a single composition. It is this density, and the discipline behind it, that lends the surface its low relief and its restless play of light, where one petal may read warm in one moment and cool in the next, depending only on how it is held.

Such fineness is not ornament alone. The tightness of the stitch and the natural lustre of the silk give the panels a quiet resilience against splashes, so the clutch keeps its composure across the length of an evening, as assured at the close of the night as at its beginning.

Key Features

  • The immortal among flowers. The haitang was named 花中神仙 by the Tang scholar Jia Dan, an honour carried for over a thousand years through the gardens and verse of the Chinese court.
  • A blessing in bloom. Set in the imperial gardens beside magnolia and peony, the haitang formed the auspicious wish jade hall, wealth and honour (玉堂富贵), a hope for a prosperous and peaceful household.
  • The poet's flower. Su Shi lit tall candles so the begonia would not sleep through the night, sealing its place as a symbol of refined beauty and graceful repose.
  • A motif reimagined. The traditional pattern is deconstructed and recomposed into a contemporary lattice, made to be carried as readily today as it was admired in its own age.
  • 600 stitches to the inch. Hand-embroidered in mulberry silk using double-set, laid and even stitch, for relief, depth and a shifting play of light across the surface.
  • Composed to last. The same density that gives the embroidery its beauty lends it a quiet resistance to splashes, dressed for the evening yet equal to it.

Premium Materials

  • Full-grain cowhide, structured into a clean box silhouette that holds its form in the hand.
  • Mulberry silk embroidery, worked panel by panel across the body of the bag.
  • Suede-velvet lining (鹿皮绒), soft to the touch and protective of everything carried within.
  • Polished gold-tone hardware, a five-bar musical staff clasp meant to read as fortune kept close, finished with a faceted bullet-head terminal where the handle meets the body.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind

Because each haitang panel is embroidered in silk by hand, no two clutches are ever quite the same. A petal that lies a fraction differently, a stitch that catches the light in its own way, these are the marks of true handwork rather than imperfections, and subtle variations in placement may exist against the product images. The overall aesthetic remains faithful throughout. As each piece is measured by hand, a variance of one to two centimetres is normal and to be expected.
