Song Brocade is among the three great silk traditions of China, alongside Yun Brocade and Shu Brocade. It originated in Suzhou during the Song Dynasty and reached its highest refinement as a fabric commissioned for imperial portraits, court furnishings, and the mounting of classical paintings. Its distinguishing quality is not simply the lustre of the silk, though that is immediately apparent. It is the depth of the pattern, woven in multiple layers, so that the motif reads as three-dimensional, full, and alive in the light.
The peony woven into this bag is rendered in deep rose, dusty pink, and sage green across a ground of warm ivory, with gold thread woven through the composition.
