The Song literati did something peculiar and lasting with flowers: they gave them characters, ranked them by temperament and then called them friends. Plum was the pure friend, orchid the fragrant one, and a scholar's garden was understood as a company of acquaintances rather than a display of colour. From that habit came the groupings that still order Chinese decorative art, the four friends among flowers (花中四友) among them, four blossoms chosen so that between them they cover the turning of the year. The Tang Red 17 Four Friends of Flowers Song Brocade Bag gathers them into a single woven panel in lilac, celadon and butter yellow, and it is made to be kept.

The Motif · Four Friends of Flowers (花中四友)

The layout is qiulu (球路), the ball path, a classical Song brocade device in which large circles interlock across the cloth so that every meeting point becomes a smaller frame. Inside the great circle at the centre sit four flowering sprays, each given its own quarter, and the lesser circles carry single blossoms and curling tendrils. The colour is held to lilac, pale celadon, butter yellow and white on a cream ground, a range narrow enough that the pattern reads as texture from across a room. It is the most architectural of the brocades in this group, geometry first and botany second.

Song Brocade Weaving

Song brocade (宋锦) has been woven in Suzhou for roughly 1,000 years, developed as the cloth for mounting imperial paintings and calligraphy and inscribed on China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. The ball path layout seen here is one of its oldest signatures, recorded in Song pattern books and still used as a test of a weaver's setting out, since the circles must close perfectly across the full width of the cloth or the error compounds with every repeat.

The weave itself is a three-harness twill ground with supplementary wefts carrying the pattern, which is why Song brocade lies flat and supple rather than stiff. Panels are cut to centre a full circle on each face of the bag, then bound in cowhide at every edge.

Key Features

  • Flowers as company. The Song habit of naming blossoms as friends ranked them by character rather than colour.
  • The turning of the year. The four are chosen so that between them they carry every season, a wish for good fortune without a gap.
  • Su Shi on the late garden. The couplet the motif is read against is one of the best known in Song poetry.
  • The ball path layout. Qiulu (球路) interlocking circles are among the oldest recorded Song brocade patterns.
  • A narrow palette, deliberately. Lilac, celadon and butter yellow on cream keep a busy geometry calm.
  • Structured to hold its shape. A cowhide frame, bound edges and base studs keep the square silhouette upright when the bag is set down.

Premium Materials

  • Premium cowhide leather, used for the body, the rolled top handle and the bound edges, chosen for its close grain and its ability to hold a square silhouette.
  • Song brocade (宋锦) panels, woven in Suzhou in the classical ball path (球路) layout.
  • Light gold-tone hardware, ring links at the handle, side rings for the strap and protective studs at the base, weighted rather than hollow.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind

Each panel is cut by hand from a woven length, which means no two bags carry the pattern in exactly the same position. The circle on your bag may sit a little higher, lower or fuller than the one photographed, and the colour may read differently under warm light and daylight, while the overall aesthetic stays faithful to what you see. Measurements are taken by hand, so a variance of 1 to 2 cm is normal. These are the marks of a piece made by people rather than machines alone.
