Chinese painters and poets have long held that a flower is only half itself until it casts a shadow. In the Song dynasty, when Su Shi wrote of blossom shadows (花影) climbing a terrace at dusk and refusing to be swept away, he was describing something the garden builders of Suzhou already understood: that the trace of a thing can be more lasting than the thing itself. Latticed windows were cut so that flowering branches would print themselves on white walls; screens were placed to catch the pattern of leaves. The Tang Red 17 Blossom Shadow Shu Brocade Bag belongs to that quieter tradition. Its flowers are not stated but suggested, held in soft celadon and ivory against deep pine green, and it is made to be kept.

The Motif · Blossom Shadow (花影)

The pattern is built from rounded medallions (团花), each one a blossom head opened flat and ringed by smaller florets, linked across the panel by a fine scrolling vine. Woven in pale celadon, ivory and a low gold against a deep pine ground, the motif reads at a distance as a soft luminous grid, and resolves only when you come close enough to see the individual petals. The effect is deliberately recessive. In daylight the pale threads lift; under lamplight the green closes over them and the flowers withdraw into shadow, which is precisely what the name promises.

Shu Brocade Weaving

Shu brocade (蜀锦) is woven in Chengdu and is the oldest of the four great Chinese brocades, with a documented history of more than 2,000 years. The city was known in the Han dynasty as Jinguan Cheng (锦官城), the City of the Brocade Official, after the government post created solely to oversee its looms, and the river where the finished cloth was rinsed still carries the name Jinjiang (锦江). Its signature is warp-patterned polychrome weaving, in which the colour is carried in the lengthwise threads and the design is built into the structure of the cloth rather than laid on top of it. The technique was inscribed on China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

Because the pattern is woven rather than printed, the medallions have a slight relief you can feel under the fingertips, and the colour will not lift or crack with wear. Each panel is cut so that a full medallion sits centred on the face of the bag, then bound in cowhide at every edge, a finish that protects the weave where a textile bag is most likely to fray.
