The baoxiang blossom (宝相花) is a flower that has never grown. It was invented in the Tang dynasty by assembling the lotus, the peony and the pomegranate into a single idealised bloom, seen from directly above and opened into perfect symmetry, and its name comes from Buddhist usage, where baoxiang describes the dignified aspect of a deity. Painted across the coffered ceilings of the Dunhuang caves and carved into Tang silver, it became the empire's signature ornament, always paired with the scrolling Tang vine (唐草) that carries it across a surface. The Motif · Baoxiang Blossom (宝相花)

Gold vine runs edge to edge across an ink black ground, turning back on itself in the Tang manner, and at each turn a baoxiang blossom opens in layered rings of petals. The blooms are given separate palettes so that the eye moves around the panel: ivory and pewter at the centre, mauve and dusk pink below, warm gold and silver above. Black is the ideal ground for this motif because it removes every distraction from the metallic thread, and the pattern reads almost as inlay on lacquer. This is the most ornamental piece in the group and the one that carries the strongest Tang dynasty inheritance.

Song Brocade Weaving

Song brocade (宋锦) has been woven in Suzhou for roughly 1,000 years and was inscribed on China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. Working a metallic pattern weft against a dark ground is the most demanding version of the craft, because the gold has to be dense enough to hold its line yet not so dense that the cloth stiffens, and any slack in the tension shows immediately as a dull patch. The layered petals here are built in stages, each ring of colour entering on its own weft.

A dark brocade also asks more of the finishing. Every seam is placed so that the vine continues around the corner of the bag rather than stopping at it, and the panels are bound in cowhide at every edge, which protects the metallic thread where a textile bag is most likely to rub.
