When autumn comes to the gardens of the south, the golden osmanthus (金桂) opens all at once and fills the air with a fragrance the ancients called heaven-sent.
The Chinese have long treasured this small flower for more than its scent. Its name, gui (桂), sounds like the word for the noble and the precious (贵), and so it became an emblem of honour and high standing. To pass the imperial examinations at the very top was to pluck the osmanthus (折桂), a phrase that still carries the wish for success, advancement, and a life that rises. Arranged here among scrolling branches in the old manner, with ruyi cloud-heads hidden in the foliage, the pattern speaks the blessing of gold and jade filling the hall and of fortune that runs long and unbroken.
The Tang Imperial 22 Golden Osmanthus Xiangyunsha Hobo Bag carries that autumn gold into a form meant to be lived with and, in time, passed on. Made to be kept.
The Motif · Golden Osmanthus (金桂)
Across a deep wine-red ground, golden osmanthus is rendered in the Xiangyunsha printing technique, drawn in the traditional scrolling-branch (缠枝) manner so that clustered blossoms open in layered, symmetrical sprays. Look closely and ruyi cloud-heads (如意云头) reveal themselves among the winding stems, a quiet blessing folded into the foliage. The effect is of gilded rain falling through an autumn dusk, opulent from across a room and finely detailed in the hand.
Xiangyunsha Printing, an Art in Silk (香云纱印花)
The osmanthus is set onto mulberry silk through the Xiangyunsha printing technique (香云纱印花), a method in which pattern and cloth are brought into close union so that the design reads as part of the silk rather than laid upon it. The gold holds its warmth against the wine-red ground, rich and enduring, while the silk beneath stays cool, supple, and quietly luminous. A natural protein fibre, mulberry silk carries colour with a depth that synthetic cloth cannot, and softens with wear into something that feels wholly your own.
