For more than 2,000 years, the mandarin duck (鸳鸯) has been China's emblem of a love that does not waver. Its name holds a pair, yuan (鸳) for the drake and yang (鸯) for the hen, and the Jin dynasty scholar Cui Bao called them the matched birds (匹鸟), so devoted that if one is taken, the other pines away. Tang poets would trade immortality for such devotion, and brides went to their new homes with mandarin duck quilts embroidered by their mothers. The Tang Gold 30 Mandarin Duck Nishijin-ori Brocade Tote carries that blessing of fidelity and a household made whole into a piece made to be kept.
The Motif · Mandarin Ducks (鸳鸯)
A pair of mandarin ducks glides together on a gilded stream, their plumage woven in pearl, jade green, and persimmon against antique gold. Around them unfold violet irises, chrysanthemums in bloom, and bands of overlapping waves (青海波), a scene that speaks of steadfast fidelity (忠贞不渝) and a marriage in harmony (琴瑟和鸣). As the bag turns in the light, the metallic gold threads catch and release, so the water seems to move beneath the pair.
Nishijin-ori Brocade
The brocade is Nishijin-ori (西阵织), the celebrated silk weaving of Kyoto, named for the Western Camp (西阵) of the Ōnin War, where weavers resettled after 1477. In the 16th century its workshops absorbed figured-weaving techniques from Ming dynasty China, and by the Edo period (17th to 19th century) their brocades dressed the nobility and samurai class and found favour with the imperial household.
This textile is woven in 100% mulberry silk, with metallic gold threads worked through the ground to build the shimmering water, the gilded foliage, and the wave borders. The brocade panel is set into a frame of top-grain cowhide, so that the silk is held flat and protected at every edge.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind
The brocade on each bag is hand-cut from a single, larger length of Nishijin-ori textile, and once that length is used, it cannot be replaced. Because each panel is drawn from a different part of the whole, the placement of the ducks, irises, chrysanthemums, and waves will differ from bag to bag and may not match the product images exactly; on some pieces the pair may sit closer to the centre, on others nearer the edge, or one bird may be more fully shown than the other. The colours, the gold threadwork, and the texture of the silk remain consistent across every piece, so the overall character of the design stays faithful. As each bag is finished by hand, a measured variance of 1 to 2cm is normal.
