The Gilded Vines Song Brocade Bag

★★★★★ 6,000+ Verified 5-Star Reviews

Endless, gilded, and unhurried.

The scroll running across this bag has a name, the interlocking vine (缠枝纹). Long before it was ornament, it was a wish that people drew because they could not write it down.

The Chinese call it the vine of ten thousand longevities, because the pattern has no beginning and no end. Woven in authentic Song brocade (宋锦), the Suzhou imperial weave, in gold-wrapped thread on a ground of pale ice. The pattern is not printed on the silk. It is built inside the weave itself.

No two bags are the same.

Designed by master artisans, for the woman who appreciates beauty beyond her own corner of the world.

The Story & Craft Behind The Gilded Vines

Look closely and the scroll does not resolve.

Each tendril turns into the next, each bloom gives rise to the stem that carries the following one, and the line never closes. A pattern that could not be interrupted was understood as a blessing that could not be interrupted either.

Song brocade (宋锦) is one of the great ancient brocades of China, and among the most technically demanding silks in the world. A single panel takes days. The gold is wrapped thread, not print, so the vine lifts along one curve of the bag and withdraws into shadow along the next.

Every bag is cut individually from a single bolt. The vine falls where it falls, and the cut cannot be taken back.

Beautiful enough to turn heads, woven well enough to hold its form, and made to carry its quiet blessing for generations.

  • Woven in Authentic Song Brocade
The Suzhou weavers layer warps and supplementary wefts so the vine is constructed inside the cloth rather than laid across it. The loom advances by centimetres in an hour. A weaver cannot correct a thread once the shed has closed, so the pattern must be right on the first pass, every pass, for days.
  • Gold-Tone Hardware by Master Zhou Mingyue
Master Zhou (age 56) hand-polishes every fitting against the gold already living in the weave. Too bright and it argues with the brocade. Too dull and the vine loses its light. She is also the one who engraves your bag's serial number into the metal.
  • Leatherwork by Master Lu Zhenhua
Master Lu (age 71) frames the brocade in embossed cowhide and builds every bag from the inside out, obsessive about the parts you will never see. Silk cannot be forced onto a frame. It has to be brought to it. It is the reason this bag carries like one costing several times more, and the reason it will outlast them.
  • Designed For Daily Life by Vivienne Lin
Some bags only work with the right outfit, the right occasion. But our designer, Vivienne Lin (age 43), drew the Gilded Vines at 17cm and 0.6kg, structured and light, so it looks at home specifically in your hands, with the clothes you already own and the life you actually lead.

This is the perfect little gold bag to spice up your plain outfits. I absolutely love how they used a champagne shade for the leather parts of this bag, so that it still looks dainty and not loud.

The interlocking vine scroll (缠枝纹) is among the most enduring ornaments in Chinese decorative art. It rose to prominence on Tang dynasty gold and silver vessels, spread across Song ceramics, and reached its most disciplined expression in the woven silks of the imperial workshops. The Chinese called it the vine of ten thousand longevities (万寿藤), for the pattern has no beginning and no end. Each tendril turns into the next, each bloom gives rise to the stem that will carry the following one, and the whole continues without interruption. It was a way of drawing a wish rather than writing one, a blessing for lineages that endure and prosperity that renews itself. The Tang Gold 17 Gilded Vines Song Brocade Bag carries that pattern in woven gold, and it is made to be kept.

The Motif · Gilded Vines (缠枝纹)

Here the scroll is woven, its stems running in gold-wrapped thread across a ground of pale ice tones. The gold does not sit flat. It lifts and recedes as the bag turns, so the vines appear to move through the silk rather than upon it, catching the light along one curve and withdrawing into shadow along the next. Because every bag is cut individually from a single bolt of brocade, the scroll falls differently on each one. On some pieces a full bloom rests at the centre of the front panel; on others the vine crosses the corner and continues around the side. No two are composed alike, and none can be composed twice.

Song Brocade

Song brocade (宋锦) is one of the three great brocades of China, named alongside Yun brocade (云锦) and Shu brocade (蜀锦), and inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of Chinese sericulture and silk craftsmanship. It takes its name from the Song dynasty, when the weavers of Suzhou refined a structure of layered warps and supplementary wefts that allowed the pattern to be built into the cloth itself rather than laid across its surface.

This bag is cut from 100-count soft Song brocade, a fine and pliant weave that holds its gold without stiffness and resists the sheen loss that comes with age. The result is a textile that reads as jewellery from a distance and as silk in the hand.

Key Features

  • The vine of ten thousand longevities. The scroll is called 万寿藤 in Chinese, a pattern with no beginning and no end.
  • A blessing for lineage and renewal. Each tendril gives rise to the next, a wish for prosperity that continues through the generations.
  • One of the three great brocades. Song brocade stands with Yun and Shu brocade as the finest of the Chinese woven silks.
  • Individually cut, never repeated. The scroll falls differently on every bag, so no two are composed alike.
  • 100-count soft brocade. A fine, pliant weave that carries gold thread without stiffness.
  • Premium cowhide handles. Textured leather at the hand, chosen to wear in rather than wear out.

Premium Materials

  • Song brocade (宋锦), 100-count soft weave, gold-wrapped thread on an ice-toned ground.
  • Premium cowhide leather, used for the top handles and trim, with a fine raised grain.
  • Structured internal frame, shaped to hold the silhouette without pressing on the silk.
  • Golden hardware, polished to a warm finish that answers the gold in the weave.

Every Bag Is One of a Kind

Because the brocade is woven in small batches and every panel is cut by hand, the placement of the vine scroll varies from piece to piece. Your bag may carry the pattern slightly differently from the one photographed, though the overall composition and character remain faithful to it. Measurements are taken by hand, and a variance of 1 to 2 cm is normal. These are the marks of a made object rather than a manufactured one.

Authenticity and Craft

Every Tang Heritage piece arrives with a metal authenticity card, engraved with its own unique serial number and logged in our records, verifiable directly with us at any time. It is your assurance that what you carry is genuine, traceable, and made to be kept. For the length of your life, and perhaps for the generations that follow.
