This ornament carries one scene. But it carries it on both faces, worked in the same hand, in the same silk thread, with the same precision on either side. Turn it, and the scene is still there. This is the art of double-sided Su Xiu (苏绣) — one of the most technically demanding achievements in Chinese embroidery, and the reason this quiet, circular object is far more than a decorative piece.

The Embroidery

Each ornament is worked in the tradition of Su Xiu (苏绣), Suzhou silk embroidery, using pure mulberry silk thread on a silk ground fabric. The threads are split to just 4-ply, half the thickness of standard embroidery work, requiring twice the labour and a level of precision that places this firmly outside the reach of machine production.

The double-sided technique means the embroidery is worked through a single piece of fabric simultaneously, producing the same image on the front and back with no knots, no loose threads, and no compromise in quality between the two faces. What you see from one side is what you see from the other. The craft logic behind this is ancient, and extraordinarily difficult to execute well.

The embroidered surface is encased behind high-transparency glass on both faces, protecting the silk from dust and handling without diminishing the clarity or depth of the scene. The circular frame is constructed from solid wood using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, no adhesives, no shortcuts, finished to a natural rosewood lustre and set on a classically proportioned display stand.

What This Piece Is Really For

There are ornaments you place in a room and forget. And there are objects a room orients itself around. This is the second kind.

Resting on a console, desk, or shelf, this ornament holds its ground with a quietness that draws attention rather than demands it. Guests will stop in front of it. Some will reach out to see if the scene is painted or embroidered. When they realise what it is, and that the back face is identical to the front, the conversation that follows tends to be a long one.

Guests will ask about it. What you tell them, about the craft, the artisans, the tradition it carries, is a story worth knowing. Tang Heritage exists so that story does not disappear.

A Note on Handcraft

Every piece in this collection is embroidered entirely by hand. Silk threads are selected, colour-matched, and placed stitch by stitch by the artisan, not a machine, not a template. As a result, each finished piece carries its own natural character: subtle variations in colour tone, stitch placement, and compositional detail are inherent to the process.

The piece you receive may differ slightly from the product images shown. No two pieces from this collection will be identical, and none are intended to be. This is not a flaw. It is the nature of genuine handcraft, and the quality that makes each piece singular.
