Along the marble railings of the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, there are 1,142 stone dragon heads. They are not ornamental. They are drainage spouts, engineered into the architecture of the palace itself, so that when the rains come, water pours from every dragon mouth in a single simultaneous spectacle. The Chinese have a name for it: 千龙吐水 — a thousand dragons spitting water.

This umbrella was designed from that image.

Each of the eight rib tips carries a sculpted gold dragon head in zinc alloy, positioned at the canopy's edge so that when rain runs off the fabric and gathers at the tip, it falls in a single drop from the dragon's mouth. In rain, the umbrella becomes what it depicts. The dragon plays in the water, exactly as the old phrase describes.

Cultural Symbolism

The 蟠龙 (pán lóng) is the coiled dragon, the form associated with latent power held in readiness rather than force in motion. It is the dragon of the palace threshold, the guardian form placed at entrances and drainage points to command the movement of water and ward against flood.

The interior lining draws from a separate heritage source: a cloud-and-water scroll pattern (云水纹圆墨) held in the Palace Museum collection. The design moves in continuous circulation, clouds forming and dissolving into water, water rising back into cloud. It is a pattern that represents the endless turning of natural forces, rendered in gold on black.

To open this umbrella is to hold both of these things at once: the dragon at the edge, commanding rain, and the ancient pattern of clouds and water revolving beneath.

Key Features

  • Dragon tip finials: Eight sculpted gold dragon heads in zinc alloy with gold plating, one at each rib tip — water drips from the dragon's mouth in rain
  • Interior lining: Cloud-and-water scroll pattern (云水纹) derived from a Palace Museum collection piece, printed in gold on black
  • Exterior canopy: Plain black with high-density waterproof weave and water-repellent finish
  • UV coating: Black rubber anti-UV layer on canopy surface, UPF50+, blocks ≥99% UVA rays
  • Frame: Carbon fibre ribs, wind-resistant up to Force 4/5
  • Function: Dual use — sun and rain
  • Opening: Manual three-fold
  • Open diameter: 98cm | Open height: 61cm | Folded height: 29cm
  • Weight: 356g

Craftsmanship and Materials

The canopy is woven from polyester fibre and treated with a black rubber UV-blocking coating that reflects heat as well as light, measurably reducing the temperature under the canopy on sunny days. The same fabric achieves a hydrostatic pressure rating far above standard waterproofing thresholds, so water beads and rolls off cleanly rather than seeping through.

The carbon fibre rib structure gives the frame both lightness and wind resistance. At 356g, the umbrella is substantial enough to hold steady in wind without becoming a burden to carry. The straight-open, straight-close mechanism is designed for one-handed use without a pinch risk.

The dragon finials are cast in zinc alloy and finished in gold plating with a protective coating. They are not decorative additions. They are structural end caps that also serve as the water drainage point of each rib — function and meaning occupying exactly the same object.

Emotional Positioning

An umbrella is one of the most ordinary objects a person carries. This one is not ordinary.

It carries the design language of a building that has stood for six centuries, and the imagery of one of the most recognisable spectacles in Chinese imperial architecture. It functions precisely as it appears. And it does so in black and gold, in the most uncompromising colourway there is.

For those who understand that even the objects of daily life can be chosen with intention.

Note on Care

  • Open and allow to air dry fully before storing — do not store damp
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use, to preserve the UV coating
  • Clean the canopy gently with a damp cloth; do not machine wash
  • Store in the provided umbrella sleeve to protect the dragon finials
