Lotus Flower Goddess Hairpin

The lotus (荷) is the flower goddess of the sixth month, blooming tall and graceful like a beauty standing in jade. The poet Li Bai praised it as rising from clear water, natural and free of adornment, and this hairpin, drawn from a Song dynasty fan-leaf painting of lotus rising from water, carries that same unhurried grace. A lotus unfolds in gradient enamel, its pink petals shading softly from deep to pale, with a carved jade lotus pod glowing green at the centre. Small pearls and jade beads are hand-set in a curving arc above, and a slender tassel of jade beads sways beneath. Slipped into the hair, it moves like a lotus stirred by a summer breeze.
