The Song scholar Zhou Dunyi wrote in his celebrated essay on the lotus that its fragrance grows purer the farther it travels (香远益清). This square gathers that spirit into seven designs, each painted in the manner of Chinese ink and colour (彩墨). There are lotus ponds in soft washes of blue and grey, peonies in full bloom, and wisteria and plum blossom before distant, misty hills.
