In the Shuowen Jiezi, one of China's oldest dictionaries, the character for goat is defined simply as: auspicious. The ancients understood the goat as a creature of good fortune, its image appearing on imperial court objects as a wish for all things to go well. The word for auspicious in Chinese, Ji Xiang, shares its sound with Ji Yang, the lucky goat.

This door bell carries that tradition into the home. Modelled after the silver longevity locks that were hung at doorways to protect the household, it takes the form of an ornate brass bell mounted with a hand-painted resin goat figure holding a gold ingot. Every time the door opens, the bell sounds. Every time it sounds, a small blessing enters the home.

Key Features

  • Palace Museum Heritage Design - This piece draws its design lineage from two historical artefacts: a Han dynasty celadon jade recumbent goat and a traditional silver longevity lock. The result is a piece rooted in centuries of Chinese auspicious craft.
  • Hand-Painted Resin Goat Figure - The white goat figure is individually hand-painted by craftsmen using resin spray-colouring and hand detailing, giving each piece a slightly unique quality. Minor variations in colour tone or small surface marks are a natural characteristic of the hand-finishing process and not considered defects.
  • Brass Bell with Clapper - The ornate bell body is cast in brass, with a warm gold tone that holds its lustre. The clapper inside sounds softly when the door opens, echoing the traditional belief that bell sounds bring in good energy and ward off inauspicious influences.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Star - The gold ingot held by the goat figure contains a glow-in-the-dark element. Expose it to a light source for a short time, and it will glow softly in the dark. A small wonder for the home.
  • Magnetic Attachment System - Attaches directly to iron doors and refrigerator doors via built-in magnet. For wooden or non-magnetic doors, an adhesive metal plate is included. A non-slip sticker is also provided for smooth refrigerator surfaces.
  • The Fire Goat Year - 2027 is the Year of the Fire Goat, a pairing that occurs only once every sixty years. Placing an auspicious goat decoration at the entrance of the home in a Goat year is considered especially meaningful, a way of welcoming the year's energy across the threshold.

A Note on Hand Finishing

Each resin figure is individually hand-painted and hand-detailed. Minor variations in colour, small air pockets, or subtle surface irregularities are a natural result of the hand-finishing process and are not quality defects. Please bear this in mind before purchase.
