The name comes from Bai Juyi's (白居易) "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (长恨歌), in the line describing a beauty with hair like clouds and a face like a flower (云鬓花颜). This mirror takes its design from a Northern Song flower-patterned bronze mirror (花卉纹镜) held in the Palace Museum. In old China the bronze mirror was an everyday object for dressing and grooming, its back cast with a knob and fine floral patterns, both useful and beautiful. Here flowers gather in layered shadow, branches twine, and butterflies turn among them.
